Demokrātija (gr.δημοκρατία no δῆμος, demos - tauta un κρατειν, krateio - vara; angl. democracy, fr. démocratie, vāc. Demokratie, kr. демократия) - valsts pārvaldes forma, kurā vara pieder brīvo iedzīvotāju vairākumam, kas to realizē vai nu tieši (ar likumdošanas iniciatīvu vai referendumu palīdzību), vai arī ar vēlētu pārstāvju starpniecību: valsts amatpersonas tiek ievēlētas no iedzīvotāju vidus.
