Dzimis 1630. gada 29. maijā Sentdžeimsa pilī Londonā (St. James's Palace, London) karaliskajā ģimenē. Tēvs - karalis Čārlzs I, māte - Francijas princese Henrieta Marija (Henriette Marie, Anrī IV meita). Pilsoņu kara laikā 1642. gada 23. oktobrī piedalījās kaujā pie Edžhillas, bet 1645. gadā, 15 gadu vecumā, iecelts par Anglijas armijas virspavēlnieku cīņā ar dumpinieku ģenerāļa Tomasa Fervaksa karaspēku. Cietis sakāvi, 1646. gada aprīlī bēga uz Silli salām, pēc tam Džersijas salu Lamanša jūras šaurumā, līdz beigu beigās patvērumu rada Francijā.
